Add to those the value of anonymity of location for security. The practice did not begin in the Untied States or during World War II. It goes at least as far back as the Franco Prussian war in the 1870's. The Untied States employed a system of number army post offices during its role in the First World War. Synopsis  The United States postal program for free delivery and collection services of rural mail, generally paralleling those of city delivery, was initiated on October 1, 1896 by means of an appropriation of $40,000. This came after several years of sponsorship by various farm and rural organizations and interested politicians. The program was called 'RURAL FREE DELIVERY', and popularly characterized by its initials, 'R.F.D.'. From a postal historian's standpoint, this was a bit of a misnomer since the postal markings were generally applied to collected mail, but only infrequently mail delivered on its routes.
135 135 Encyclopedia of United States Stamps and Stamp Collecting Rodney A. Juell General collecting, General publications Hardcover     2006 Kirk House Publishers 730
The Encyclopedia of United States Stamps and Stamp Collecting, introduces the collector to the full scope of United States stamps and stamp collecting. Beginning with an introduction to; stampless covers; (letters mailed before the introduction of postage stamps), it then introduces the many stamps issued from their inception with the 1845 Postmasters' Provisionals through the stamps of the early 21st century. Other chapters deal with the host of stamps known to collectors as; back-of-the-book; issues, including stamps issued for air mail, special delivery, U.S. possessions, revenue purposes, and postal stationery. The history of the Postal Service and the various stamp printers, including the Bureau of Engraving and Printing is explored. A section of the Encyclopedia highlights the technological innovations of stamp production, the history of the movement of the mails, markings applied to envelopes, and meters and machine generated postage. While a book about U.S. stamps and stamp collecting, in a larger sense it is a history of American politics, culture, values and technology seen through the prism of the nation's postage stamps and postal service. Each of the sixty-two chapters employs a similar format, wherein an introductory article is followed by practical tips on collecting; an almanac of chronological dates to orient the reader within each historical era; a selection of quotes, both contemporaneous and modern, to provide context; examples of postal usage; and a compilation of references to which the reader can turn for more information. While the Encyclopedia will be welcomed by many advanced stamp collectors, it was written with the beginning collector in mind. It assumes no prior experience with collecting, and includes a comprehensive glossary of philatelic terms. The full color, hard-bound, 730 page book is generously illustrated with stamps, covers and related material.

Standard Handbook of Stamp Collecting Richard Cabeen General collecting Hardcover     1979 Crowell 628
For a book originally written more than 50 years ago, the Standard Handbook of Stamp Collecting has aged well. Broken down into five sections--introduction to stamp collecting, postal history and cover collecting, miscellaneous subjects, technical matters, and classification and identification--the book offers specific tips on starting a collection, properly handling and storing stamps, and choosing areas of specialization. Although lacking information on recent developments, such as the widespread use of self-adhesives, the Standard Handbook of Stamp Collecting provides invaluable information on paper types and printing and perforation methods used on stamps issued before 1960. This book is not heavily specialized, but rather intended as an overview of stamp collecting and related matters. Helpful for the beginning philatelist, the Standard Handbook of Stamp Collecting is also a useful reference for more advanced collectors.

The Work of Raoul Charles de Thuin - A Half-Century dedicated to the careful and relentless fleecing of philatelists must approach being a track record, but Raoul Charles de Thuin managed with skill and cunning to practice this shabby trade among the gullible, the knowledgeable, but mostly among the unsuspecting. Seasoned philatelists and non-collectors alike frequently raise a legitimate question: Why had not de Thuin been arrested, tried and hanged for counterfeiting early in his career? After all, lawbreakers always lose, don't they? Full of illustrations and lists of forgeries, this incredible book shows the vastness of his larceny.

Ever since adhesive postage stamps were invented and introduced as a communications boon, collecting them for relaxing pleasure and as a source of educational fun has been popular. Once the philatelic spark has been ignited, one is not content merely to fill blank spaces in an album. Once wants information about them, including the significance of their purpose and design, how artists created and printers produced them, how they should be handled and mounted, and thousand of answers to kindred question. For some years, Ken Wood (editor emeritus of Stamp Collector newspaper) has realized the need for a philatelic encyclopedia easily available to the average collector. This 3 volume set (all signed by the author) reflect Ken's lack of verbosity in which he describes the topics but rather show his knack of relaying facts in a concise and readable manner.

United States Doanes, 2nd Revised Edition Richard Helbock Postal history, Cancellations, Doanes Paperback     2002 La Posta Publications 336
Edited by Richard Helbock and Gary Anderson, this greatly revised second edition is truly a giant leap beyond the 1993 publication. Not only has breadth of coverage been expanded by nearly fifty percent to include over 21 thousand different Doane cancels from across the nation, but the new edition contains scarcity index numbers ranging from '1' for common Doanes to '5' for rare marlins in the context of all other Doane cancels for each given state. United State Doanes is a major new reference in the field of early 20th century postal history. Just imagine, through cooperation we collectors have managed to reconstruct the distribution of an estimated 75% of all Doane cancels across the United States. In the absence of government postmark proof books such as those available in Canada and Great Britain, this is a major step toward recreating the pattern of postmark use in early 20th century United States. No doubt the work toward documenting the complete distribution of Doane cancels will go on as others become excited about the potential of this interesting specialty, but United States Doanes, 2nd Edition, represents a monumental contribution to our knowledge and illustrates what can be done in our hobby when a fairly small group of people put their heads together.
United States Letter Rates to Foreign Destinations: 1847 to GPU-UPU Charles J. Starnes Covers, General publications Hardcover     1982 Leonard H Hartman 74
The analysis of U.S. mail to foreign destinations in the 1847 to GPU-UPU entry period was formerly neglected by the average senior collector, who depended on a very few early student for information, and they, in turn, were generally unaware of the original sources of philatelic data. The compilation presented here has been based on an attempted critical study of rates from all known sources.

World Postmarks Reginald Kenneth Forster Cancellations, Postal history Hardcover     1973 Batsford 187
Interest in postmarks has never been so great: it is an international enthusiasm steadily increasing in supporters. Between post markings and postal history there are well-defined links. Earliest known examples date from the Egyptian era, 5000 years ago when messages were sent with red and blue markings, and the words. 'In the name of the living King, speed!' In England, postmarks made their first appearance in 1661, and were the invention of Postmaster General, Colonel Henry Bishop. His aim was to stamp letters with the date of receipt at the post office to prevent carriers delaying in deliveries.
